“Musicalism”: DeLaurentis new album is out

Musicalism Cover

DeLaurentis returns with Musicalism, an album that delves into the connections between music, color,

and emotion through the lens of synesthesia.

This ambitious project, blends electronic sounds, vocals, and cutting-edge technology to deliver a new experience that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Inspired by synesthesia – the ability to associate sounds with colors – DeLaurentis crafted each track to reflect a specific hue and emotion. Among these, Mystic Blackwood invites listeners into a world of deep, mysterious black, while Tangerine Land radiates vibrant energy, represented by the color orange.

Tangerine Land holds particular significance in the album’s story. It is a reimagining of the first track DeLaurentis created using DrumGAN and Notono, tools developed by our Music Team at Sony CSL – Paris. Our artificial intelligence tools helped her shape a rhythmic foundation and construct a bold universe. The album also includes Mystic Blackwood, a track whose bassline was crafted with tools developed by our team. DeLaurentis refined some parts for tonal reasons but kept sections generated by the AI, particularly the subtle “ghost notes” which add a distinctive texture to the track.

To push the boundaries of how music and technology can interact, DeLaurentis collaborated with our lab on her next immersive live show where she will present her new album.  With PESTO, our Pitch Estimation with Self-supervised Transposition-equivariant Objective combined with Alexis André’s visuals & tool, she transforms her voice into a visual instrument. During her performances, her voice interacts in real-time with generative visuals, creating a fully immersive experience where sound and image blend and enhance one another.

Alexis André, Sony CSL – Paris researcher, explains: “The idea was to use artificial intelligence to empower artistic creativity. DeLaurentis controls everything with her voice, and the system follows her direction to unlock her creative potential.” A powerful demonstration of how technology can serve as a genuine driver of artistic expression. Musicalism offers a deeply immersive listening experience. The album was designed in Dolby Atmos to create spatialized soundscapes that envelop the listener, enhancing every tonal color. A 360° live performance, developed in partnership with Radio France, Hervé Déjardin, and France Télévision, is in the works to bring this immersive experience to the public.
