Sony CSL (Sony Computer Science Laboratories) is a leading-edge organization that works to create new research areas and paradigms and new technologies and businesses for the common social good. We find inspiration in developing technologies and businesses that hold great promise of providing a brighter future for all.
When founded in 1988, Sony CSL focused on fundamental research in computer systems, including operating systems, the Internet, and user interfaces. As the organization evolved, its focus shifted to exploring ways to use computers in diverse domains such as systems biology, econophysics, and artificial intelligence. Nowadays, its central research themes are “Global Agenda,” which encompasses issues ranging from energy to food and healthcare; “Human Augmentation,” which includes studies exploring human creativity and human-computer interaction/integration; and “Cybernetic Intelligence” for various industries. As a result, our scientific, technical, and technological solutions benefit society across a wide range of fields and industries.
We may anticipate greater convenience and enhanced capabilities. Still, these can be accompanied by unforeseen effects – both positive and negative – on how we live our daily lives, how we communicate, and even on our privacy. Hence, we choose to proactively bring future technologies under development in the lab to users as early as possible, allowing us to cultivate an active, rather than passive, engagement among the general public when it comes to the process of change. We want people to experience first-hand the new human capabilities that technological progress promises and which we encourage them to explore, assess and discuss.
Sony CSL Paris was founded in 1996 and it is a small but booming research cell, using tools from complexity science, data science, and artificial intelligence to investigate fundamental questions in areas as diverse as understanding and creating music, language, sustainability, innovation dynamics, and creativity. Sony CSL Paris plays a leading role in the areas it has chosen to be active in. It produces a steady stream of papers in the most prestigious journals and conferences. The lab is viewed as highly innovative and plays a leading role in European IT research.
